INDIAN VEG CHAPEL MARKET ANGEL ISLINGTON

Walking into Indian Veg on Islington's Chapel Market feels like stepping back into the early days of the internet. Every inch of the walls is covered in colourful clip-art posters, bold slogans and hand-made manifestos celebrating vegetarianism. One sign claims vegetarian food will improve your love life, another argues meat is responsible for war. It's wonderfully chaotic, completely unapologetic and unlike anywhere else in London.

Indian Veg first opened in 1985 under Mohammed Safa and, more than 40 years later, it remains one of North London's great culinary institutions. While much of the capital has embraced tiny plates and eye-watering prices, this place continues to do things its own way.

If you're planning a visit in 2026, here's what to expect.

The buffet is still one of London's best-value meals. At around £12.95 for all-you-can-eat, it's hard to think of anywhere else in Zone 1 where you can eat until you're full without worrying about the bill.

One of the biggest draws is the BYOB policy. They don't serve alcohol, but you're welcome to bring your own beer or wine without paying corkage. Pick up a few drinks from the nearby off-licence, grab a table and settle in.

The food is simple, hearty and endlessly comforting. Expect trays of fluffy pilau rice, brown rice, rich dal, crispy onion bhajis, fresh salads, chutneys and a rotating selection of vegetable curries. Most of the buffet is vegan, with dishes clearly labelled, although a few vegetarian options containing dairy are usually available.

What really sets Indian Veg apart is its community spirit. Alongside serving thousands of customers every year, the restaurant has long provided free meals to local homeless people, a tradition that has become just as much a part of its identity as the buffet itself.

When you've finally finished your last helping and head to the till, you'll spot one final reminder of the restaurant's philosophy: "Congratulations, you've had a cruelty-free meal."

You'll leave full, probably carrying the lingering aroma of curry on your clothes, perhaps slightly merry from your own beer, and wondering how a place this wonderfully eccentric has managed to survive in modern London. Long may it continue.
